The SLOT ME IN™ OPEN FIREPLACE STEEL FIREBOX INSERTS (single & double face opening models) are a bespoke fully welded steel open fireplace “insert”. Like or similar in function to a traditionally constructed brick open fireplace the SMI Open Fireplace is exactly that, an “open fireplace”, not a slow combustion heater or such but a pure and straightforward open fireplace made from the finest Australian steel. There are no glass doors, no fire bricks, no electrical fans, no switches or wiring to crack, break, melt or fail, simply a unique and innovative steel open fireplace insert like none other in the world. Some would say over engineered, we say made to outlive the purchaser (yes a bold statement), and we stand by it. Simply put you will not find a superior or equal steel open fireplace anywhere on planet earth! Our open fireplaces are everything other open fireplaces wish they could be.

The single face opening models are designed to be installed into a prepared open fireplace structure opening (“void”) with an integral chimney while the double face opening models are placed into position first and the structure built around them from the ground up including the chimney. They all create a superb steel-lined open fireplace with a conventional chimney flued vertically above them. All models can be used internally or externally in any non-combustible housing structure made from single brick, double brick, stone, concrete, block work, aerated concrete (Hebel Panels or similar), mudbrick  or other non-combustible materials wherever a “true” open fireplace is desired. They are perfect as an open fireplace inside your home or as an outdoor feature open fireplace in an alfresco outdoor area to all gather around their warm ambience and to cook on also. There’s nothing more inviting than an open fireplace for keeping warm around and watching the flames flicker while all at the same time using a 100% all natural, sustainable, and renewable energy resource in firewood as the fuel source.

Each SMITM Open Fireplace Steel FireBox Insert is precision laser cut from 100% Aussie 10mm thick BlueScope XLERPLATE™ TRU-SPEC™ HA350 grade steel right here in Australia and is fully welded externally. All welding is concealed from view when installed into their housing structure and inside the visible burning chamber there are only the crisp clean lines of the steel junctions meeting with no visible welds or fixings. There simply isn’t a steel open fireplace firebox insert in the world that comes close to the build quality, durability, performance, and innovative features of the SMI Open Fireplace. What's more it's made using 100% Australian materials by Australians right here in Australia. Some of the innovative features include cooking methods facilitated by our original and unique side ledges on all models that support further cookware accessories we make in house here in Australia. They all require a minimum of one length (models 600, 900 & 1200) and a minimum of two lengths (models 1500 & 1800) of stainless steel inner flue section(s) (which we manufacture in modular 1000mm lengths in varying diameter sizes) concealed inside the chimney structure and a minimum of one (models 600, 900 & 1200) and a minimum of two (models 1500 & 1800) outer diameter stainless flue (which we also manufacture in modular 1000mm lengths, 50mm larger in diameter than the inner flue) to form a double skin flue on exiting the chimney structure along with the adapter plate(s) and chimney wind rim cowl(s) again both made in stainless steel and available to purchase from SLOT ME IN™ separately. Furthermore, they all require a fire grate to rest on the bottom of the open fireplace floor to hold your firewood above it when burning again which SLOT ME IN™ also manufacture in 5 sizes, the SMI FIRE GR8’s™ 600, 900,1200, 1500 & 1800 models specifically for them.

The outer faceplate (on visual show) of all of our models no longer has any etched branding of our logo or our name on the outside like some of our earlier models depicted in images searched for or shown herein on our website. The faceplate is plain and contemporary with an optionalized service if required for your own personal inscription of a cut out or etching by our laser cutter either wording or designs etc. This service is quoted as an extra charge and dependent on provision by yourself to supply us with the necessary artwork design or wording in a DXF file format to us prior to manufacture. Once ordered and paid for this service can not be added later it needs to be done at the time of purchase so in manufacture it is done as one operation. Please note that the entire product is free from any painted surfaces. It is simply supplied as a raw steel unit with a transit/storage natural coat of organic grade food oil. There is no point painting the interior as it's an open fireplace and any paint will fail internally due to the extreme temperatures during operation. The visual outer faceplate after installation if required or desired can be painted (by the installer or owner) with a high temperature rated paint once installed, with the correct preparation prior.

The SMITM  Open Fireplace isn’t just a “steel firebox insert”, far from it, its unique and original having a specifically designed raised angled top “gather” with incorporated flue outlet(s) which draw smoke upwards just as a well-designed traditional brick/stone fireplace does with the bonus of being an all-steel structure for superb heat retention and radiance of heat outwards unlike no other. The SMITM   Open Fireplace “steel firebox inserts” come in 5 standard width sizes (models 600, 900, 1200, 1500 & 1800) with each of these widths available in 2 opening options, single face opening (solid rear viewed from one side only) or dual faced opening (viewed from each side whereby you see through to an adjoining room or area). This later option, dual “double sided” opening model in all 5 widths available makes for a great feature and room divider that can be used from either side.

From our smallest model the 600 model through to the 900, 1200 and right up to our two largest ones, the 1500 & 1800 models often referred to here at Slot Me In™ as the “Dragon's Lair” & “Hades” (1500 & 1800) respectively each one is meticulously fabricated to order from our proven designs developed over many years of research, innovation, function, form & style when working with fire. Whether used for domestic or commercial purposes in houses, hotels, clubs, wineries, breweries, bistros, pubs or such they will not only be an impressive feature to admire complementing architectural design but add an ambience of presence, warmth and character all of their own that only a true open fireplace can.

If you don’t want a full solid chimney structure our stainless-steel flue system can be exposed internally and continue through the ceiling/roof cavity to leave externally from the structure with an optional compliant triple penetration kit including the correct “deck tight” for the applicable roof covering (tile/steel etc). This will require the services of a registered and licensed plumber in your state. Reference to Standards Australia AS/NZS 2918 (2018 edition) will need to be adhered to for flue & chimney installation and positioning when installing.

A unique, original and innovative feature of the SMI™ OPEN FIREPLACE “STEEL FIREBOX INSERTS” are our 2 cookware (grill/hot plate) support ledges approximately halfway up each side designed to support an optional grill plate to cook over the coals when the flames have died down and it’s not being used as a fireplace for heating. Our WEDGE FIRE PIT™ 800 & 1100 model full grill plates or our WEDGE FIRE PIT™ 800 & 1100 combo grill/hot plates perfectly fit on these 2 support ledges for the 600 & 900 open fireplace models respectively (both are optional accessories) and can be used to grill, BBQ, bake, cook pizzas and hold camp ovens or fry pans on for incredible cook ups over “FLAME ‘N’ COALS™”. For the 1200, 1500 & 1800 series models open fireplaces we custom make grills or hot plates for them depending on the clients’ requirements ($POA). There are also available our original & innovative full all-stainless steel cantilever grills available for all 5 models and both widths in the  600, 900, 1200, 1500 & 1800 (single or dual face opening options) respectively which utilize the side ledges inside the SMITM Open Fireplace “steel firebox insert” to engage and cantilever out from the SMITM Open Fireplace “steel firebox insert” to load with produce for cooking and then push back into the SMITM Open Fireplace “steel firebox insert” to be cooked (in a similar fashion to your oven racks in your home or commercial oven).

Another unique feature (optional cooking accessory, which is also removable) is the SMI™ Aussie Boomerang Swing Arm Kooka Krane™ which can be used in either of the 2 ledges (in each open fireplace) specifically for hanging traditional camp ovens or the like over the fire which can be lowered, raised, and swung in or out of the open fireplace as required. Unique positioning holes in each of these ledges, one on each ledge (left & right side) for single face opening models and two on each ledge (4 in total) for all dual face opening models) allow the vertical round bar of the SMITM Aussie Boomerang Swing Arm Kooka KraneTM to be passed through and positively locate on the “steel fire box” floor into a sealed locating pivot hole (both left or right hand sides). There is also an optional fully integrated slimline fire screen guard for all models as well as a removable low profile coal guard barrier, the SMI Flame ‘N’ Coal Guard Barrier™.

We didn’t stop thinking outside the square when it came to the unique cooking features of our open fireplace range, you may never use them but they are there if you're looking to elevate to a whole new world of cooking over fire. Incorporated in the structural assembly design (internally) we have included angled open web truss technology that firstly enables precise engineering assembly in our factory when manufacturing them, then secondly it adds a very unique feature allowing “asado” style hang cooking points situated inside the raised gather component (not visible from the outside). The single faced opening models (600, 900 & 1200) have 2 hang points while the single faced opening models (1500 & 1800) have 3 hang points. In the double face opening models the hang points are doubled, giving 4 hang points in the 600, 900 & 1200 models and 6 hang points in the 1500 & 1800 models. Put simply with the addition of a hang hook and chain in any of the hang points with say the addition of our SMI Asado Oz Iron Kooka Kage™  you can suspend produce (meat or vegetables) over “Flame ‘N’ Coals™” below. As our unique angled web trusses in each of our open fireplaces are just that (open designed) they allow  air and smoke flow to be unrestricted which allows full draughting and breathing of the fire without hindering performance in any way. No other open fireplace anywhere has such inbuilt features like ours.

Built into all models also are 2 unique lifting points fully rated for each model. They allow the connection of rated D shackles and slings or chains to be attached to them for example to allow a crane connection or similar to enable lifting and maneuvering them into position on any building site, especially handy up onto a second story  or multi storey installation.

Each face plate measures 1920mm W x 1020mm H x 10mm D. Each opening of the two face plates or “viewing area” are an enormous 1820mm W x 700mm H, again very appropriate to its nickname “Hades” for holding one hell of a fire. With this 1800 double face opening model a twin flue system consisting of 2 x 300mm (inner) and 2 x 350mm (outer where required) flues are used. This 1800 double face opening model will also require 2 x 300mm/350mm double skin stainless steel adapter plates and 2 x 300mm/350mm stainless steel wind rim cowls when exiting the chimney top (think of it like a twin exhaust system on a car or truck). Note: The adjoining finished floor level often called the hearth must be at least 50mm lower than the supporting base level and be made of a non combustible material for a distance of at least 300mm out from each of the two faceplates on each side.

Note: The faceplate adds 10mm to the overall depth of the internal/external dimensions (detailed above) on the single opening face model option open fireplaces and 20mm on the double opening face model option open fireplaces, making them 670mm & 980mm deep overall respectively. (Faceplate front to rear of open fireplace on single face opening models & faceplate front to faceplate front on double face opening models).

Note: The flue centre line viewed from above is measured from the vertical face of the exposed chimney structure, or rear of the face plate (the junction of the two) which makes contact with it when installed and is 480mm for the single opening face models and also 480mm from either face of the chimney on double opening models. This allows for chimney walls of up to 300mm thick to be constructed and allow the flue to be vertical and clear of the chimney inner walls in all models. Double opening models have been designed to work 4 standard bricks and mortar joins (950mm plus a 10mm mortar/brick tolerance) back of faceplate to back of faceplate and allows the same thickness of chimney walls 300mm on each face to be used and again allow the flue to be vertical and clear of both chimney inner walls. For example here using traditional double brick construction, usually the thickest medium (270mm wide for example using two Australian standard bricks 110mm wide each with a 50mm cavity) there is ample room for flue clearance. Our design eliminates cranking of flues with angled joins when constructing to our guideline dimensions for chimney construction making flue installation a lot simpler and straightforward, your plumber installing the flue components  will appreciate it too, not to mention better drafting (breathability of the open fireplace). 

Note: We recommend only stainless steel flue, adapter and wind rim cowl components (not galvanised steel or raw steel) as longevity of these components is of the utmost importance. Further when installing your flue system (inner flue first) the “crimped or rippled” end of the flue faces downwards and all sequential additional inner flue sections follow the same procedure. This is the correct method of flue ventilation for any open fireplace or slow combustion wood heater as any saps, creosotes, resins or such expelled during the burning process of firewood can pass up the flue. These substances can consolidate and leak externally from the inner flue if the flue above is not slotted into the one below. In other words do not reverse the recommended inner flue procedure advised here, doing so runs the risk of leaking saps, resins, creosotes etc and can lead to flue fires and flare ups between inner and outer flues when used together. The outer flue (second skin) when required is installed in the reverse procedure “crimped or rippled” end facing upwards, this enables our wind rim cowls to securely locate and lock the twin skin flue system together at the very top.

Note: All dual opening model open fireplaces require the non-combustible housing structure to be built around the open fireplace insert on site when it’s in place. Due to the double face plates on these models, they do not slide into an enclosed housing cavity and require the fire box to be in the desired finished position prior to chimney construction. The housing structure is then built around them afterwards. The finished floor level adjoining each face plate often called the hearth must be at least 50mm lower than the base of the open fireplace inserts on which it sits and be made of a non-combustible material for a distance of at least 300mm out from each faceplate on both sides also. You can of course increase this floor height drop (min 50mm) to the resting base of the open fireplace to suit your personal requirements and we suggest you sit on a chair and visualise where you want the base of the open fireplace to be relative to the finished floor level for maximum viewing and heating pleasure, remembering the viewing height “window” is 700mm high on all models, single & dual face opening options. As a general guide, having the open fireplace constructed base somewhere between a minimum of  50mm up to say 400mm above the finished floor level is a good starting point. Remember any floor coverings (non combustible such as tiles, stone, polished concrete, paving, bricks etc) used for a hearth directly out from the resting base of the open fireplace must be taken into account on top of the raw unfinished outer floor level versus the inner resting place of the open fireplace. When building new or renovating, allow for your finished hearth height to be no less than the required 50mm lower than the resting base of the intended SMI Open Fireplace model chosen to be installed.

Note: All single sided model fire boxes can be installed after the housing structure for them is finished as they only have a single face plate and simply slide into the cavity opening made for them. There is no need to secure the open fireplace insert into position, with a correct opening size enclosure (measurements are provided above for each single face opening model). With and a true and level base they will simply locate hard up against the outer face structure of the chimney and their sheer weight and unique design structure incorporating welded level steel skid “breather” fins will ensure they won’t move and have sufficient thermal break properties between the base and supporting structure allowing for any differences of thermal expansion.

Note: All models (open fireplace fire box component only) ship on a pallet with the shipping specifications, size & weight varying according to each of the models size and opening options. The sizes & weights displayed in the “DETAILS” section are the “SHIPPING SIZES & WEIGHTS” and not the actual product size or weight. Accessories purchased at the same time can often be added to the same pallet, though this will increase the weight of the combined order and or the pallet size or number of pallets also.

Warranty/Guarantee (All models): Lifetime on the “steel open fireplace firebox”, “fire grate”, “flame ‘n’ coal guard”, “fireplace screen”, “cookware accessories” (swing arm & grill) & “fireplace tools”. We stand by our work and our SMI™ Open Fireplaces will outlive the user.

Shipping: We are flexible with our shipping & transportation options with the following options available. Firstly our courier ships to our transport depots throughout Australia as close as possible to your building installation location for you to arrange pick up from that depot on a pallet(s) with suitable transportation provided by yourself from this depot by prior arrangement (a quotation for this cost can be provided before purchasing with this option). Secondly picked up from our factory (Melbourne Vic) by prior arrangement with us using your own suitable transport or transport service (this service is FREE), or thirdly to a business or construction site address with a forklift or crane available (provided by yourself) for unloading our courier or fourthly for us to provide a tailgate courier service on our courier truck to unload it to ground level at your site (you will still need your own lifting equipment to move it from delivery onto your site) with this later service charged accordingly  to the location in Australia (again we can provide you with a quotation for this service prior to purchasing). Prior to purchase we can quote a shipping price anywhere in Australia by simply supplying a delivery address and list of items needed by email to us for a delivery quotation. Note in some instances depending on the locality within proximity to our Melbourne, Victoria, Australia manufacturing base we can deliver at a subsidized rate and in some instances for free if lifting equipment (namely a forklift or crane is provided by the purchaser) at the delivery address. Please call us or email us to confirm this availability option.

Payments: All purchases require full payment prior to manufacture. There is a lead time of 4 to 6 weeks from purchase (order placement & payment) to pick up or for a delivery leaving our factory. All models whether custom made, or the standard 10 models listed are specifically  manufactured to order once payment has been completed. Package deals with additional added optional accessories are available upon request including our SMI Oz Iron Kookware™ range (Australian made fireproof cookware).
