The SLOT ME IN™ OPEN FIREPLACE STEEL FIRE BOX INSERT (single & double opening) is a fully welded and sealed steel open fireplace “insert”. The single opening models are designed to be installed into a prepared open fireplace structure opening (“void”) while the double opening models are placed into position first and the structure built around them. They all create a superb steel lined open fireplace with a conventional chimney flued vertically above them. All models can be used internally or externally in any non-combustible structure housing from single brick, double brick, stone, concrete, block work or similar non-combustible materials wherever an open fireplace is desired. They are perfect as an open fireplace inside your home or as an outdoor feature open fireplace in an alfresco outdoor area to all gather around their warm ambience and to cook on also. There’s nothing more inviting than an open fireplace for keeping warm around and watching the flames flicker while all at the same time using a 100% all natural, sustainable, and renewable resource in firewood as the fuel source.

They are precision laser cut from 100% Aussie 10mm thick BlueScope XLERPLATE™ TRU-SPEC™ HA350 grade steel right here in Australia and are fully welded externally. All welding is concealed from view when installed in their housing structure and inside the visible burning chamber there are only the crisp clean lines of the steel junctions meeting with no visible welds or fixings. There simply isn’t a steel open fireplace fire box insert that comes close to the build quality, durability, performance, and innovative features (including cooking) on the market compared to the Australian made and owned using Australian materials and labor of the SMI™ OPEN FIREPLACE STEEL FIRE BOX INSERT by Slot Me In™.

They all require a minimum of one length of stainless steel inner flue section (which we manufacture in modular 900mm lengths in varying diameter sizes) concealed inside the chimney structure and a minimum of one outer diameter stainless flue (which we also manufacture in modular 900mm lengths, 50mm larger in diameter than the inner flue) to form a double skin flue on exiting the chimney along with the adapter plate and chimney cowling again both made in stainless steel and available to purchase from SLOT ME IN™ separately. Furthermore, they all require a fire grate to rest in the bottom of the open fireplace floor to hold your firewood above it when burning again which SLOT ME IN™ also manufacture in 3 sizes, the SMI FIRE GR8’s™ 600, 900 & 1200 models specifically for them.

The “fire box” isn’t just a steel box, its unique and has a specifically designed raised angled top “gather” with incorporated flue outlet which draws smoke upwards just as a well-designed traditional brick/stone fireplace does with the bonus of being an all-steel structure for superb heat retention and radiance of heat outwards. The “fire box” comes in 6 standard size/opening options, 3 width models 600, 900 & 1200 with each model as mentioned above in a single or dual face opening option (see all the 6 standard model options below). 

If you don’t want a full solid chimney structure our stainless-steel flue system can be exposed and continue through the ceiling/roof cavity to leave externally with an optional compliant triple penetration kit including the correct “deck tight” for the applicable roof covering (tile/steel etc).

A unique, original and innovative feature of the SMI™ OPEN FIREPLACE STEEL FIRE BOX INSERTS are the 2 cookware (grill/hot plate) support ledges approximately halfway up each side designed to support a grill plate to cook over the coals when the flames have died down and it’s not being used as a fireplace for heating. Our WEDGE FIRE PIT™ 1100 & 800 model full grill plates or 1100 & 800 combo grill/hot plates perfectly fit on these 2 support ledges for the 900 & 600 models respectively (both are optional accessories) and can be used to grill, BBQ, bake, cook pizzas and hold camp ovens or fry pans on for incredible cook ups over FLAME ‘N’ COALS™. For the 1200 series models we custom make grills or hot plates for them depending on the clients’ requirements ($POA).

Another unique feature (optional accessory) is the SMI™ Aussie Boomerang Swing Arm Kooka Krane™ which can be used on either side of the ledges (removable) specifically for hanging traditional camp ovens or the like over the fire which can be lowered, raised, and swung in or out of the open fireplace as required. There is also an optional fully integrated slimline fire screen guard for all models too as well as a removable low profile coal guard barrier particularly handy on the 3 size dual face opening options.

We can, if required, design and manufacture other sizes (non-standard to our range) upon request for your specific requirements ($POA). Also, we can manufacture any of our “fire boxes” with a secondary outer optional external steel skin making them free standing and fully exposed without the need for a non-combustible housing structure to sit them in ($POA). Required Housing Openings: 980mm (min) to 1000mm (max) W x 920mm (min) to 950mm (max) H x 540mm (min) D. The fire box face plate has a 40mm wide surrounding plate wider than the outer dimensions of the steel fire box insert (sides & base) to cover the clearance gaps on the sides & base and sits 10mm proud out from your structure face. The top edge of the face plate is 260mm to cover the required opening of the raised top section of the fire box commonly called the “gather”. You can build your housing structure (non-combustible) using these dimensions and simply slide the “fire box” into position on a flat structural level non-combustible base then flue it up (requires a registered and licensed plumber to flue through roof cavities) and you’re ready to have the first of many fires for generations to come.

Note: The face plate adds 10mm to the overall depth of the internal dimension on single opening fire boxes and 20mm on double opening fire boxes.

Note: All double-sided model fire boxes require the housing structure to be built around the fire box on site. Due to the double face plates on these models, they do not slide into a housing cavity and require the fire box to be in the desired finished position then the structure housing them is built around them afterwards. All single sided model fire boxes can be installed after the housing structure for them is finished as they only have a single face plate and simply slide into the cavity opening made for them.

The sizes & weights displayed in the “DETAILS” section are the “SHIPPING SIZES & WEIGHTS” and not the actual product size or weight.
