SMI Open Fireplace Steel Fire Box Insert Fire Screen Guard

Over the years we’ve often been commissioned to make open fireplace fire screen guards for our customers own existing open fireplaces (usually the stand alone type) which position or simply stand out on the hearth in front of the open fireplace, and also for our own SMI OPEN FIREPLACE STEEL FIRE BOX INSERT™ too.

This month we can announce a new “slimline” open fireplace fire screen guard is now available for all 3 models of the standard size SMI Open Fireplace Steel Fire Box Inserts™, models 600, 900 & 1200 both single sided opening and dual sided openings, the later (dual sided opening) accepts 2 “fire screen guards”.

The new SMI OPEN FIREPLACE STEEL FIREBOX INSERT FIRE SCREEN GUARDS, we’ll call them “OPEN FIREPLACE SCREEN GUARDS” are a slimline design that locate into the front opening of our SMI Open Fireplace Steel Fire Box Insert with our unique yet simple to use twin pin location at the base and a unique cam action lever handle lock at the top.

To install the open fireplace screen guard, you simply lift it by the lever type central handle at the top or the top edge or the open fireplace screen guard and at a slight angle (base first) slip the 2 locating pins into the 2 locating holes at the front base of our SMI Open Fireplace. Next with the handle vertically up (at 12 o’clock as to speak) simply tilt the top (push it) till it standards vertically in the front opening of the SMI Open Fireplace and twist the handle downwards to 6 o’clock which locates and locks the open fireplace screen guard into position. Removal is simple, it’s the reverse of this procedure with the exception of wearing some protective heat resistant safety leather gloves as it will be hot when you have a fire burning, so take precautions when removing it. For this very reason a pair of heavy duty leather safety heat resistant gloves XL size are included with each of our open fireplace screen guards. These gloves come in handy too when handling your firewood especially when loading it into your fireplace.

Once installed our open fireplace screen guard gives you peace of mind from large flying embers which usually occur when first starting your fire with kindling or for when you have to leave the fire unattended shortly for some particular reason. The guard is perfect too for installation when retiring for the evening when going to bed knowing that no burning firewood can accidently roll out of an unattended fire. Supervision of children is paramount, and it goes without saying though and we can’t stress with enough emphasis that children should ever be left around any fire without adult supervision. Our open fireplace screen guard when installed with a fire burning will get very hot so its important to supervise children around it in use also so they don’t touch it or come into contact with it also. Just as importantly when removing it from in front of a burning fire the gloves included are used and when rested against any structure and floor surface after removal (as it will be hot) that they (the supporting surfaces) are heat resistant too.

With our unique design and simple operation our open fireplace guard sits flush to the face plate on our SMI Open Fireplace giving it a sleek slimline appearance without the bulk of a stand alone type screen out in front of the open fireplace. It can be left in place installed when you’re not burning a fire so its right at hand when required too. A little background on its invention came about from our other unique accessory previously released last month (January 2023) the SMI AUSSIE BOOMERANG SWING ARM KOOKA KRANE™ which uses the 2 base holes in our SMI Open Fireplace for its operation. We saw the opportunity to utilise these further and hence the locating pins on our open fireplace screen guard use these 2 locating holes also.

Generally speaking, an open fireplace screen guard is initially used/installed when first starting your fire with your kindling as mentioned previously. Once the fire is up and going it isn’t necessarily required and to some people (including ourselves) to some extent it does take away from the ambience of the fire watching the flames dance and for that reason it can be left off for you to enjoy your fire view uninterrupted. For peace of mind when left unattended or for retiring for the evening as also previously mentioned then it does come in handy to install it.
