SMI Aussie Camp Oven Hi-Rize Roasting & Steamer Racks™ models 250, 300 & 375

This month we have a great new additional accessory available for our SMI Aussie Camp Ovens (all 3 models 250, 300 & 375) the SMI Aussie Camp Oven Hi-Rize Roasting & Steamer Rack™ (“roasting/steamer rack”). This new “roasting/steamer rack” allows dual zone cooking, superb roasting and steaming in all 3 sizes of the SMI Aussie Camp Oven™ (“camp oven”).

With 3 generous sizes of “camp ovens” available (250, 300 & 375 models) to choose from, all come with a low-profile food grade 304 stainless steel rimed edge cooking trivet perfect for all styles of cooking whether baking, roasting and much more. Always developing and testing new accessories and products here at Slot Me In™ and forever on the quest for improvement and versatility of our existing products has led us to this new accessory now being available.

When traditionally roasting meat & vegetables together for best results in your home oven or restaurant for that matter best results are obtained with a roasting pan combined with a roasting rack. Good cooks and chefs know that the vegetables roast best on the base of the roasting pan and the meat roasts best elevated above them on a roasting rack allowing the heat to fully circulate around the meat resulting in the juices drizzling over the vegetables and gathering at the base, great for a homemade gravy stock. Our extended range of SMI Oz Iron Kookware Roasting Pan Sets™ released earlier this year in March 2023 (also available to purchase here on our website shop) were designed and manufactured this way for that very reason. Well, it’s no different in a camp oven either, hence the need for a roasting rack when roasting a combination of vegetables together with meats (eg chicken, lamb, beef, goat, pork or other types of meat) in a single “camp oven”.

Putting all of your vegetables and meat just on one level at the base of a single “camp oven” on the low-profile rimed edge trivet can end up a little bit cluttered and yes with several camp ovens used all at once this often isn’t the case as you can spread the cook up (meat & vegetables) out over several “camp ovens”. What we set about was to reach as close as possible the maximum potential yield when just a single “camp oven” was being used by adding a new elevated roasting position and steaming feature as well.

With the addition of the new optional “roasting/steamer rack” you can now combine it and the already included standard low-profile rimed edge trivet (one comes with each of our camp ovens) in each “camp oven” kit together for a more substantial cook up with superb results from a single “camp oven”. Simply place the low-profile rimed edge trivet on the base of the camp oven (rim edge down). Next add all of your vegetables evenly in a single layer onto the trivet (for roasting best results are obtained by par boiling or steaming your vegetables prior). After your vegetables are in place add the “roasting/steamer rack” on top of the vegetables (the three corner footprints of the triangular “roasting/steamer rack” are small and just need the vegetables to be clear of them). There is 50mm clearance under the “roasting/steamer rack” for vegetables. Now place your meat on top of the “roasting/steamer rack” put the camp oven lid on and you’re ready to cook with FLAME ‘N’ COALS™.

If you’re just roasting meat (a single large piece) on its own in the “camp oven” you can also use the “roasting/steamer rack” by itself resting it on the base of your “camp oven” for a little more elevation allowing the heat to fully circulate around, over and under it. With a number of smaller meat pieces (chicken drumsticks or wings for example) add the low-profile rimed edge trivet on top of the “roasting/steamer rack” then place them on top.

For steaming use simply fill the empty “camp oven” with water to a depth of about 30 to 40mm.  Next add the “roasting/steamer rack” immersed into the water (it should be just clear of the water bath below) then place the low-profile rimed edge trivet (rim edge up) on top and add your produce. Next seal the camp oven with the lid and onto your flaming coals to allow the water to boil and create steam. The perforation holes in the low-profile rimed edge trivet will allow the rising steam to pass through it and steam your produce resting on it such as fish, vegetables, fruit and even dim sims.

All 3 size “roasting/steaming racks” are 100% Australian made by Slot Me In™ using 100% Australian materials. All 3 sizes are made from food grade 304 stainless steel in a 5mm solid round bar profile in our unique triangular design with an innovative top holding pattern that allows easy access (when roasting meat above) to still get to your vegetables below if need be. Being stainless steel it won’t rust and is easy to care for and clean up can either be with hot soapy water in your sink or you can your wash it in your dishwasher also. When not in use it stores inside your “camp oven” for transit too ready for use when required along with our other great accessories the SMI Aussie Fire Trivet™ and or the SMI Aussie Camp Oven Fire Trivet™.

Another handy feature of the “roasting/steamer rack” is that it can be used to rest your hot camp oven on too (when the “roasting/steamer rack” is not required for cooking) above the ground or on a tabletop to protect the surface below or grass from heat damage. Hot frying pans, skillets, woks, billies, kettles and much more can also be rested on the “roasting/steamer rack” too to again protect any surfaces from heat damage. We’re sure you’ll find a host of other uses for it too, so step up to the next level of “camp oven” cooking with the SMI Aussie Camp Oven Roasting/Steaming Rack™ addition for your camp oven.
