With the season now changing from summer to autumn this month here in OZ and the cooler months approaching what better way is there to enjoy our great outdoors than around a cosy fire enjoying its warmth and glowing ambience, sharing a laugh, drink, cooking and entertaining with loved ones, friends and family.

As the inventors of the “original” and total “flat pack” fire pit THE WEDGE™ FIRE PIT way back in the late 1970’s SLOT ME IN™ and our products (namely THE WEDGE™ FIRE PIT) have evolved and developed into what is available today. Originally a very “rustic” WEDGE FIRE PIT ™ was a fully hand-made product, well before the advent of the internet, Facebook and a lot of the modern technology, machinery and tools required to manufacture the current ones existed. Our “original” hand-made WEDGE FIRE PITS™ mainly found their way into homes of friends and family and consumers by word of mouth with minimal advertising. These 3 models here featured in our news segment this month have been around from the very beginning, unfortunately they can’t always make it to our shows and expos due their size and weight so we thought what better way than with a little news feed and reacquaint the public with some of our fire pits for home use.

THE WEDGE™ FIRE PIT will make a stunning and unique landscape feature in any environment be it from a small deck, patio, balcony, outdoor alfresco area, courtyard, poolside, rambling backyard or wherever an open fire can be enjoyed. It will also make a great feature and focal point at clubs, pubs, bars, wineries, restaurants and bistros as well. It will form a beautiful gathering place to enjoy the warmth and cosy ambience of a fire by with friends, loved ones and family by bringing your outdoors to life and extending entertaining hours outside. There are 3 models to choose from in our “original design” all designed as mentioned to suit the smallest of spaces up to large open areas requiring a large fire pit. Only the finest Australian steel has been hand selected for use of manufacture and the specific grade of steel we use is a hot rolled 350 HR BlueScope XLERPLATE® TRU-SPEC™ steel. Over time and left out in the elements THE WEDGE™ FIRE PIT will take on a “patina” (a naturally occurring process of this exposed type of steel) turning from a deep cold steel blue/grey to a glowing autumn yellow/orange and finally settling  to a warm bronze/oxide red. The finish on each one will vary slightly depending on its environmental location and positioning along with the amount of usage and be as individual as a fingerprint. The image attached shows the 3 model sizes from left to right of THE WEDGE™ FIRE PIT 500, 800 & 1100 models respectively.

Arguably the most popular 100% Aussie made from 100% Aussie materials, 100% Aussie designed, 100% Aussie invented and 100% Aussie owned fire pit and camp cookers on the market today. THE WEDGE™FIRE PIT started life as a school project an underwent extensive development prior to a full laser cut manufacture for commercial launch into stores all around Australia many years ago. It’s been copied in a myriad of forms (rather a complement to its originality of a clever design) but NEVER matched for quality of build and materials, function, form, features, durability, accessory range and all round performance. Unfortunately there comes with copies less quality, dubious claims of steel origin and much more. Cheap copies often cut corners using inferior or thinner gauge steel , make false claims as to the origin or type of steel used and operate from “backyards”  with no listed business address and only a mobile phone number and website. The only corners we cut are with a laser on the radiuses (radii) of our steel removing sharp corners wherever possible. We build to a standard of performance and quality, not just price, with the end use, our customer’s enjoyment in mind. We have a manufacturing base and factory, whereby appointment we will open so you can inspect your intended purchase at a physical address first hand.

As size is increased in fire pits so too is the requirement of special grade steels and design features combined with steel thickness. Fire pits can be subject to enormous temperature variations and left to the elements of time and weather they all take their toll.  What might appear a good cheap buy often ends up being a disappointment. On the other hand some products can be way overpriced for what you’re actually getting performing only one task when they could do so much more. After all if it’s just a fire pit and not much else, well and good if that’s what you’re after but as you know here at SLOT ME IN our passion is “FIRE & FOOD”. Our fire pits are designed for multi use with a host of accessories you can add over time making them exceptional value when you stack up what they can do and the variety of add on accessories that have been developed and tested by us. Some accessories are designed to help you use your existing fire safe cookware as well. We have a mission in manufacturing quality sustainable long lasting multi use products, and if it enables you to use one of your existing products on our fire pits, all the better. We also never paint or powder coat our fire pits. There is no need too, it puts unnecessary chemicals into the environment, increases production costs and the end sell prices and it doesn’t last, it will simply burn off. Our steel is intentionally left raw to age naturally and as such develops its own unique character with a patina all of its own. As the fire pit ages it will weather gracefully lasting a lifetime.

Well now to some of the technical stuff as to speak. All 3 steel models shown here are available in an option of 2 steel thicknesses in each model. All use the same hand selected 350 grade HR BlueScope XLERPLATE™ TRU-SPEC™ steel, its Australia’s finest. Listed below is an overview of each models specific specifications.

• THE WEDGE™ FIRE PIT DECK ‘N’ PATIO™ (also known as THE WEDGE™ 500)* Available in 6mm or 8mm thick 350 grade HR BlueScope XLERPLATE® TRU-SPEC™ steel. Both measure 500mm (50cm) L x 500mm (50cm) W x 245mm (24.5cm) H when fully assembled. The 6mm thick model weighs 28 kg while the 8mm model weighs 37kg. Both consist of 5 individual pieces and require NO TOOLS OR FIXINGS for assembly and are fully precision laser cut manufactured in a raw steel finish.
• THE WEDGE™ FIRE PIT AURORA OZRALIS™ (also known as THE WEDGE™ 800)* Available in 6mm or 8mm thick 350 grade HR BlueScope XLERPLATE® TRU-SPEC® steel. Both measure 800mm (80cm) L x 800mm (80cm) W x 345mm (34.5cm) H when fully assembled. The 6mm thick model weighs 67kg while the 8mm thick model weighs 85kg. Both consist of 5 individual pieces and require NO TOOLS OR FIXINGS for assembly and are fully precision laser cut manufactured in a raw steel finish.
• THE WEDGE™ FIRE PIT OUTBACK™ (also known as THE WEDGE™ 1100)* Available in 8mm or 10mm thick 350 grade HR BlueScope XLERPLATE® TRU-SPEC™ steel. Both measure 1100mm (110cm) L x 1100mm (110cm) W x 445mm (44.5cm) H when fully assembled. The 8mm thick model weighs 160kg while the 10mm thick model weighs 200kg. Both consist of 5 pieces and require NO TOOLS OR FIXINGS for assembly and are fully precision laser cut manufactured in a raw steel finish.

So with 3 different model sizes and 2 different thicknesses of steel in each model there is a choice of 6 options to suit your requirements.  Furthermore we can personalize your very own WEDGE FIRE PIT™ (at an additional cost subject to the amount wording) with laser etched or laser cut through wording onto one or more faces of the fire pit. We can even custom make a larger one than our stock models also if required.

There are a full range of accessories available for each model for you to take your WEDGE FIRE PIT™ to the next level in outdoor fire cooking and entertaining as well. Full hot plates, combo hot plate/grills, grills, spit rotisserie kits, spit rotisserie support bracket kits, cookware support bars, deck trolleys, water fillable under trays, windshield hot plate adapters and many more. Some accessories like the windshield hot plate adapter and rotisserie bracket support kit are universal and fit all 3 model sizes. Deck trolleys for your WEDGE FIRE PIT™ enable ease of maneuvering and water fillable under trays to sit them in are for added safety when burning on timber decks or for lawn preservation if moving about them about in the backyard to catch any ash and embers that may pass through our specifically designed drafting slots in each fire pit and save your lawn from being burnt. We have an adapter plate coming that will allow the use of our SLOT ME IN™ Kookabox™ multipurpose smoker, pizza oven, baking oven, roasting oven, bbq, grill and more to be used on (currently only for use on the SLOT ME IN™ Aussie Volcano Chiminea™) on the 2 larger models THE WEDGE™ 800 and THE WEDGE™ 1100. It’s been in R & D now for several years and due to be released in early 2019 with some very unique features, so stay tuned.

Passion and pride are foremost in our minds in delivering a product you will enjoy and cherish for decades to come. These fire pits (and accessory range) will be hand me downs to can pass on to your children. Our branding is discreetly laser etched on the steel and not cut through as on our camping models (you can reverse each piece if you want a total plain look…it's hardly visible anyway). They come fully “FLAT PACKED” (5 pieces in each model) and require NO TOOLS OR FIXINGS to assemble, that’s right there are no nuts, bolts, screws or welding required, a feature of all our flat pack fire pits. Each fire pit is precision laser cut to exacting tolerances. The only through cuts are the joining “slots” on the sides and ends to enable simple assembly, as well as two drainage/ lifting holes in the removable base plate and our superior drafting ventilation holes on each side piece that allows the fire to burn with superior drafting and efficiency of burning.

All 3 models ship (transport) Australia wide as a flat pack package. The 500 models in either thickness in recycled cardboard packaging which you can use to start your first fire with and the 800 and 1100 models in either thickness  on a wooden pallet you can even recycle as heat for use as kindling for starting your first fire. Minimal plastic in the form of shrink wrap is used which can also be recycled. Due to the weight of the individual pieces of steel in the 800 and 1100 models (both thicknesses) it is advisable to have a second person aid in assembly to help hold an adjoining piece for safety purposes. Care should be taken and working safety gloves used when assembling all models. The same goes for lifting and moving your fire pit. It is advisable to assemble the 800 and 1100 models where they intend to be set up to eliminate heavy lifting as a complete unit.

All models are stocked at our factory and available for purchase (please note: not all authorized distributors of SLOT ME IN™ products will carry these items, THE WEDGE™ FIRE PIT  500, 800 & 1100 models are specialty products). They more than likely will order them in as a special purchase order for you and as such may have an additional freight cost added to the recommended retail price. If your local authorized distributor won’t order them in for you or you are too far from an authorized distributor you can purchase direct from SLOT ME IN™ and have it shipped to you. Delivery to a central depot in each capital city of each state and territory of Australia is FREE OF CHARGE, depots are located in Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne, Hobart, Adelaide, Perth & Darwin and you will then be required to pick it up from the depot with suitable transport yourself once the depot has notified you of its arrival. For all other regions in Australia (requiring delivery) please ring or email us for a shipping quote (with a minimum of your postcode but preferably your full address). We can then provide you with two discounted delivery options. Firstly one to your address requested, or secondly the closest transport depot of our courier to that address, where there you can arrange to pick it up from with suitable transport once they have notified you of its arrival. You can of course organize your own courier to pick up from our factory or pick up from our factory direct yourself, the latter two options will need to be made by an appointment time as we are not open to the public unless by prior arrangement.
